Professional Overview

Mechanical Engineer at Work

Mechanical engineers research, design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal sensors and devices. As one of the broadest engineering disciplines, they work on everything from electric generators and internal combustion engines to medical devices and robotic systems. Most mechanical engineers work in offices, but they may occasionally visit worksites where a problem or piece of equipment needs their personal attention.

To enter the field, you typically need a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for mechanical engineers was $102,320 in May 2024. Employment is projected to grow 9 percent through 2034, which is much faster than the average for all occupations, driven by the demand for automation and innovative energy systems.
